A Celebration of Stencils

Stencils one of the most versatile tools in your crafting stash! They are easy to use and also are relatively inexpensive! This is one reason I love them so very much.

One issue I have when using stencils is shifting, especially the edges. It can be really annoying when you have a beautiful start to the stenciling and then it shifts. Using a bit of removable adhesive on the back of your cardstock and press it into your work surface. I found especially on this card when using the embossing paste on the edges it was particularly helpful.

I love adding texture visually with stencils and ink. Adding to the fun can be using texture pastes and glazes. I used the Altenew Embossing Paste and let me tell you, it was the best embossing paste this girl has ever used. Using texture paste can be a very messy process. When using the Altenew paste I found clean up to be very easy and it takes ink like a breeze. I will link to it here because once you use it, you can never use another!! Click here.

A few other things you can try with embossing paste is adding color to it with ink. On this card I used Altenew Half Tone stencil and simply used my ink cube (Ruby Red) added a dollop of paste and mixed it on my worksurface. The paste will soften the color a bit because in color theory if you add white to a color it will lighten the color. I would suggest if you want a brighter color that you increase the amount of ink and go brighter than you think you need.

If you find that you made a little too much? That a great thing you can do a few things, you can put it in a plastic baggie and save it. Another fun thing if you put it in a baggie is to use it like a piping bag on another project or you can grab another piece of cardstock and a stencil and make a background for future use!

One more thing I found to be helpful is to swatch your stencils. I know another swatching project. (You’re welcome) I discovered using black and grey ink to swatch my stencils was the best as it kept the stencil images the focus. I keep my swatches with my inks swatches to encourage me to use them more often.

Koi, Oh Koi – Mix it up with multiple stamp sets

Stamps – Hero Arts -Lotus Flower, Koi Fish – Altenew Inks – Hero Arts ,Catherine Pooler, Tim Holtz, Copic Markers and Polychoromos colored pencils; Stencil – My Favorite Things

Have you ever had a moment when you get a new stamp set that you say, “Oh, Boy, I know what I want to do with that!” I love how this card did that!

I had two stamp sets show up on the same day and I had one of those moments. I opened my happy mail and set them out on my desk so I could put them in the storage sleeves and these two stamp sets, from Hero Arts and Altenew, popped an idea into my mind and Koi, oh Koi did I love it.

I did ink over the image of the koi to give it a look of being underwater. I thought it came out great when I used the “Pool” stencil from MFT to give the water a look of motion. Simply using an ink that is slightly lighter (TH Tumbled Glass) over the new Catherine Pooler Cummerbund ink that I used with the stencil. I did put the ink over the image of the koi. (Which made me nervous– but hey, it’s only paper right.)

It’s sometimes hard to imagine mixing stamp sets and stamp sets from different companies even more so when it comes to images. I try to stretch my stamps by mixing them with not only images from within a company line but look outside the company as well. In this example, it worked great.

I encourage you to make something and combine many companies images. It is fun and a great challenge.

Blessings,

Erika

Northwoods Stamps – Fall is in the air

Colored with Prisma and Polychromo Pencils

I am a fan of all stamps. I like when they are clear or red rubber or even blue! I do however, have a few favorites in every category. One of my favorites in the red rubber collection is Northwoods stamps. I was lucky enough to stumble upon them at my FAVORITE local scrap/card making store Scraps of Love (They do have an online shop and do have this stamp set. They are a local business that you can support and I encourage you to do so.)

I really do love the clean, crisp lines of red rubber stamps and the detail the artist can get in the stamp image. This card is for my Mother In Law (the best person I know in the universe) and if you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. I love hearing from you!

Superstar Card Contest

Well, it has rolled around again and I am going for it in two categories. Color Virtuoso and Clean and Simple. I am excited to share my creations for the contest. I am both proud of myself and I am nervous for getting back in the game. I’m also considering looking for a Design Team to join. It has been a while but I am in my own craft room again so that makes it a little more fun. I also know that I love working under deadlines and truth be told, I kinda miss it! So why not. I always loved working on DTs.

Enough about me, I wanted to share my cards for the Superstar Card Contest. So, here they are:

Coloring Virtuoso – I spent a lot of time making sure each house was different and adding texture to the buildings. I also had to alter the puppy to make him to not be itching his ear.

For the Clean and Simple Category, I used a set that is most often used as a “fall” card. Lots of orange and reds. I went another way. I also didn’t make a “fall” card. I really enjoyed making this card and sharing it. I am very happy with the result of this one.

There you go now I wait, with a flip floppy stomach. I don’t know why it makes me so nervous other than having another person judge your work šŸ™‚ I like them and I know that’s all that matter but there is so much talent out there, so many better than mine. What I do know is you can’t win if you don’t enter šŸ™‚

Be blessed my friends!

The 30 Day Coloring Challenge

I took an online coloring class a few weeks ago at Online Card Classes. It was there I learned about Katthy Racoosin @kathyrac and her 30 day challenges. I decided to do this challenge which is simply 30 days of coloring for 15 minutes or more. Pick something and color, color it, and post it on the facebook page. It is to keep you nice and calm. Last night I began the challenge and wanted to share what I made. I suppose I will be behind as I usually do my creating at night.

DAY ONE :

I hope you enjoy the next thirty days of coloring. Feel free to leave any coloring tips in the comments!

New Year, New Cards, New Attitude

YEP! I am excited for 2020! I am seven days in and already I have a real positive vibe for the year. I am excited for the new systems in place at work, new craft room, new ideas and a full year with wonderful ideas and creativity.

I am always creating. Looking to be better at what I love. I am taking classes, learning and applying. I am always trying to stretch myself.

I have one flaw. I have loyalty issues. If I fall in love with a brand, I tend to stick with them and feel guilty about loving or using another brand. Well, I bet you know what brand it is I love and feel guilt over… Yeah, My Favorite Things. It’s not anything they have done, but my own brain wanting to give them my energy. Just like when I worked with Fun Stampers Journey or CK or any of those DTs I was on… Anyway, I don’t have to feel bad that I am expanding my stamp collection. I mean let’s be real I love them all!

I have begun sharing my creations with other companies and I still feel a little guilty but I am working really hard to not! I am not going to bail on the companies I love, I am just expanding my horizons! Here it is, some of my other Favorite companies. (In no particular order)

  1. Simon Says Stamps (brand) – I am finding I really love the many styles of this company.
  2. Stamping Bella – Okay, there is literally NOTHING I don’t like from this company. I have in just a few months purchased over 100 of her stamps. OH boy I am broken
  3. Clearly Besotted – Good night they speak to my heart. Cute stamps and simple designs

There are more, but I wanted to make this post not a novel. HAHAHA I will stop there. I will add a few pictures of some of the cards I have made recently like last week!

Birthday Challenge Anyone?!

Birthday Challenge

When I think of CAS (Clean and Simple) I think of clean lines and beautiful color. That is how I love to make cards. When My Favorite Things has a CAS Birthday Challenge you know I am in.

I had finished this card but thought it needs a little more “pop” because whomever I send it to will need to know that they are worthy of fireworks! I reached for my embossing powder (which I have wayyyy too many) and was going to use silver or gold then I saw the COPPER Tinsel! It was perfect for the awesome firework stamps I got last year from MFT.

I hope you enjoy this CAS card and would love to see you post one at the Challenge. Check it out here. Birthday Project Challenge

My Monthly Hero kit.

Sometimes I sign up for a kit and get a month that I think, well it’s nice but I probably won’t use that. I honestly thought that Dec 2019 would be that kit for My Monthly Hero. I was so wrong. I made not one but two from this set and I am head over heels in love with this kit. Well one is from an add on, I saw it and had the idea for the Galaxy background the second I saw it.
